Wednesday, 6th December 2017. As a Resort that loves families, rated on Trip Advisor for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017 as the Number.1 Family Resort in Fiji, the Radisson Blu Resort Fiji have embraced the Christmas tree lighting tradition to welcome its festive Season. What a more fitting way for the Resort to launch its countdown to Christmas, with the Resort’s newly appointed General Manager Mr. John Bendtsen welcoming all who attended.

On Monday 4th December, Guests and Staff eagerly gathered at the brightly decorated lobby from 7.30 pm while Santa mingled with the guests handing out candy and taking pictures with the children. As the General Manager led the countdown, guests joined in and witnessed the Blu themed Christmas tree brightly lit for the first time. Staff sang Christmas Carols while kids excitedly gathered around the Christmas tree with Santa in awe of the lights which created a warm and cozy ambience.

“You can really feel the Christmas spirit, it truly looked and felt like Christmas at the Radisson Blu Resort and the kids just loved it. Being a family focused Resort, it is obvious we delight in the most anticipated time of the year which brings families and people together”, says John Bendtsen.

The Resort has a number of exciting activities planned for Christmas among these are the gift wrapping station, photo with Santa booth, Christmas movie marathon for the kids and a 12 Day Countdown leading up to Christmas with daily and room specials, this can all be found on the Resorts Website.

“The Christmas tree lighting ceremony held this year is the start of an age old practice newly inaugurated into the Resort. Plans are already set for a bigger and better celebration next year and we not only invite our Guests to attend the tree lighting ceremony but neighboring guests and all who wish to bring their kids”, says John Bendtsen.

Christmas has certainly come early for the Fiji Pine Group employees, as they received a record-breaking Christmas Bonus Payment of over $650,000 – more than triple what was paid out this time last year.
The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while officiating at the event said the distribution of the bonus payment was a success and wouldn’t have been possible without the right leadership at the top.

“The leadership of your Board and management, under Faiz Khan, has brought energy, commitment and dedication to my Government’s vision for the development of Fiji’s forestry industry. And leadership has brought disciplined, prudent financial management and transparency to this organization, and instilled Fiji Pine with a spirit of partnership and collaboration with its management, landowners, and workers,” he said.

Each of them will receive $1000 as part of the $650,000.

Mr Bainimarama said the staff of Fiji Pine have shown their hard-work and commitment and that every cent was well deserved to them payment breaks down into $1,000

“While I’m sure that’s all exciting to hear, it should also make the men and women in this room feel very proud; for record bonuses only come from record results, and those results would not have been possible without each of you. It is your work, day in and day out, that has made this a great year for the company.
He also said the employees have helped lead the company through difficult times to reach unprecedented heights.

He reiterated that in 2010, the Fiji Pine Group was facing catastrophe.

“There were no payments to shareholders. There were no profits. And there certainly weren’t any bonus payments during the holidays, like the one you are all receiving today,” he said.
The company has achieved record profits these past six years, and have repaid over 60 million dollars in loans. They have also built a foundation for sustained growth – investing over 70 million dollars in strategic upgrades.

“You’ve welcomed a new Drasa Factory – a state-of-the-art timber facility; the Wariki wood chipping facility; and the brand new Vislanda sawmill, which I has honoured to open with you earlier this year.

“Working alongside our landowners, you’ve made this industry profitable and, more importantly, you’ve kept sustainability at the core of all of Fiji Pine’s development.”

To alleviate and boost the tourism industry in the economy, ninety three (93) students of Fiji National University tourism and hospitality faculty  were graduated  at Nadi campus.

Chief guests Dr Isimeli Tagicakiverata thanked members of the faculty, parents, friends, and all  stakeholders  to celebrate the important occasion.

“This graduation is only the beginning of greater things to come and I would urge you all to continue pursuing higher qualifications in the near future,” he said.

Dr Tagicakiverata mentioned that the excitement of joining the workforce for  new comers, marks individual transition from being a  student to workers.

“The road that lies ahead won’t be easy, work life is not always smooth sailing, because there will be obstacles and challenges and headaches,” he added.

He said all those are  all part of work and it is where a student  will need to use intuition, interpersonal skills or soft-skills to make  work life easier.

“Discipline, good time management and resourcefulness are important qualities to maintain,” he added.

The National Training & Productivity Center he said  is mandated to provide training to organisations so that  transformation is efficient, productive and competent in the domestic, regional and global markets.

“We strive to be at the forefront in terms of providing quality training to the nation’s work force, but more importantly providing relevant current training demanded by the industry,” he added.

The role of NTPC, he said  was  to prepare the work force of the future, to be visionary, innovative in  thinking is something to capture.

“Over the years, the NTPC has produced some prominent leaders, who had gone through our apprenticeship and other courses, and who have risen through the ranks to become senior figures in the private sector and in government,” he added.

“The Department of Hospitality, Tourism & Travel is based at the NTPC Namaka Centre and also training venues are set up in Hospitality and Tourism regions around the country.”

“We are proud to associate with the industry and also work with them because they help us develop specialised training programmes that meet daily needs.

He said the faculty is intending  to facilitate more programmes for smaller scale entrepreneurs’ with tailor-made programmes.

“Our programmes are set up to assist trainees to  perform when they join the industry, or trainees who are already in the industry,” he added.

He said the Department of Hospitality and Tourism has been very actively involved with the industry to upgrade the courses offered by the department and also to make it easier for its students to find career pathways.

“As we all know there is an alarming gap between the demand and supply of skilled workers in Fiji besides  training  provided by NTPC helps to fill that gap especially for the hotel and tourism sector,” he added.

“This sector already generates significant income, employment and investment and we are playing our part at NTPC to ensure that the industry grows from strength to strength,” he said.

Graduates, he said need to developed a set of distinct knowledge and qualities and skills which describe  unique abilities and competence for the job roles and careers, besides the campus recognized and acknowledged  the role of trainers and teachers.

GOLDEN SUCCESS

WINNING Gold at the Pacific Mini Games was all Malakai Kaiwalu wished for when he left for Vanuatu.

At Korman Stadium, the Vatulele native jumped 2.06 meters over the bar to see his wish come true as he bagged a gold medal to add onto Fiji’s tally.

“I am excited and over the moon with what I have achieved. I wanted to do much more than the height I jumped but it didn’t really happen. But winning that gold is enough for now,” Kaiwalu said.

“I was just thinking about the sacrifices I made towards my training and didn’t want it go to waste so I was aiming for that gold. I was also thinking of my mother and my whole family back in Fiji their prayers and support towards me,” he added.

The gold medal win to Kaiwalu was something to show his gratitude to his family for their endless support.

As he dedicated his win to his mother, Liviana Kaiwalu, who raised him single handedly after her marriage broke-up, emotional Kaiwalu said his grandmother also played her role in inspiring him.

“My grandmother was very inspirational as before I left the airport on Saturday, she told me to always put God first, have faith in myself that I could do it because it’s only through Him that I will be able to accomplish victory,” he added.

Kaiwalu’s sacrifice started at an early age in 2008 when he was a year 9 student.

He recalled how he had to live without a father figure in his life as his mum played both roles of being a mother and a father to him when his parents separated.

Emotional, he was still grateful that his father still gave him his blessings before he departed to hoist Fiji’s noble banner blue in Vanuatu.

“There were times when I had to ask my mother to give me money for my training gear and bus fare so this win is a happy moment for me as I try to erase those sad memories.

“I changed some of the techniques which helped me win the gold medal, after some coaching, I polished my running techniques and I am grateful to my coach for teaching me that.

“The win is for all my families in Suva and Ba for being there and supporting me; God played an important role in my life blessing me with the talent,” the former Xavier student said.

Meanwhile his win pushed Peniel Richard of Papua New Guinea and Mosese Foliaki to second and third places respectively.

Fiji Airways brand new premier lounge at Nadi International Airport is now open.

The state-of-the-art facility was officially unveiled by the Attorney General and Minister responsible for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen said it had taken months of design and extensive work for their customer experience team, architects, contractors, suppliers and Airports Fiji Limited to be able to finally open the lounge.

“As I look around this 887 square meters space I can say that it was all worth it,” Viljoen said.

He said 2017 has been a monumental year for Fiji Airways with record profits share, bonus payout, union acquisitions, the delivery of their new aircraft, the groundbreaking of Fiji Airways full flight simulator Aviation Academy, new airline partnerships announcements and upcoming destinations announcements.

“There’s no better way to complete this tremendous year then by unveiling our world class Premier Lounge today. This is the biggest investment we have made to enhance customer experience aside from our aircraft,” Viljoen said.

He said it was the perfect complement for the newly refurbished Nadi International Airport.

Viljoen adds the new premier lounge will set new standards for luxury, comfort and convenience for their premium guests.

“Who are these guests? Our business class travelers, our Tabua Club members, eligible guests on our partner airlines, along with those guests that are willing to pay for this on a one-off basis,” he said.

The Lounge can cater for 200 guests at a time.

Viljoen did not reveal the total cost of the lounge although stating that it was substantial.

He adds that all of Fiji Airways recent successes would not have been possible without the extensive support of the Government.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General congratulated Fiji Airways for their recent achievement.

He also discussed how Fiji is capable of delivering products.

“Fiji is capable of delivering even better products, it can only happen where there is a vision and it can only happen when there is collaboration,”  Mr. Sayed- Khaiyum said.

Airports Fiji Ltd (AFL) is hosting 6 aviation related seminars, workshops and meetings in Nadi in 2018.

AFL Executive Chairman Faiz Khan said “due to the challenges of Pacific Island countries to attend such seminars that are usually held far and wide, we want to bring as many seminars to the Pacific’s doorsteps.

The 23 participants from Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Fiji will also have the opportunity to mingle and network with each other. As this is an Asia Pacific event we hope more countries from Asia will be coming to our beautiful Fiji to attend future workshops and meetings.”

“5 of the 6 seminars that AFL will host are organized by Airports Council International (ACI) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).”

“The ACI-ICAO Developing Nations Airport seminar that starts today in Nadi focuses on Aerodrome Certification, Compliance and Audit training. We are committed towards building the capacity of our people and the airport industry for continuous improvement in aerodrome compliance in accordance with ICAO standards and guidelines,” explained Khan.

Khan said that “Air Transportation is the greatest enabler for connecting our people and our economies. In the Pacific due to our geographical isolation, our economies are heavily reliant on air connectivity for generating trade and tourism for economic growth.

It is important that we continue to up-skill our people through such trainings that will ensure our airports are safe, integrated, efficient and sustainable for air travel in today’s Jet Age.”

The ACI – Developing Nations Airport training seminar on Aerodrome Certification, Compliance and Auditing currently underway in Nadi will conclude on Friday.

WAF restored water supply in Nadi and Lautoka

The water supply in the Nadi and Lautoka areas is now restored following the completion of   the planned Nagado Water Shutdown over the weekend.

WAF Board Director, Mr Kamal Gounder, thanked the members of the public in the affected areas for taking heed of the notices and storing water to sustain them during the water disruption period.

Mr Gounder said it was a challenge for WAF in ensuring that the public had water during the disruption.

“Ensuring the availability of the drinking water requirement of 165,000 customers, including the hotel sector and other businesses during the shutdown period was the major challenge that WAF faced during our planning phase. But with proper planning, we were able to meet the challenge. Awareness amongst the public, major customers including hotels, businesses and Government institutions helped WAF to achieve the goal,” said Mr Gounder.

“Adverse weather, maintaining drinking water standards in water tanks, and availability of limited water cart trucks were other challenges that we had to overcome. However, with advanced planning, WAF managed to face to the situation.”

Mr Gounder said that lessons were learnt after successfully completing the repairs to the leaking Vanessa valve at the Nagado Water Treatment Plant.

“We identified certain sections within the water distribution network that are weaker and sensitive to pressure variations. That information will be helpful for future operations. There are some more minor points picked up during the operations that could be further improved,” said Mr Gounder.

President for Fiji and Tourism Association, Mr Dixon Seeto, praised WAF for its commitment in providing excellent service during the disruption period

“The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association appreciates WAF’s commitment in providing excellent service during the disruption period. WAF has been facilitating all water carting request in a timely manner to the hoteliers,” said Mr Seeto.

“Water Authority of Fiji’s consultation with the hoteliers regarding the shutdown period notified us one month prior to shutdown, which gave hoteliers ample time to fill their reserve tanks. The water repairs progress update was forecasted and was well informed. The hoteliers are very thankful for the massive awareness that was conducted by WAF. There was a great collaboration between WAF and Fiji Hotel association and we will continue to strengthen the stakeholder relationship,” said Mr Seeto.

Lala Sowane – Director Operations Pacific Destinations Fiji, said, “The advance notice really helped us plan make sure our operations were not impacted at all by the water disruption. And we’ve not heard anyone say anything negative about the water disruption so far, so the advance notice was very helpful and the constant notices kept it in mind for us, so the constant reminders I think as late as Friday I received a text message about the water disruption.”

Carreras Resident, Ms Kolora Mason appreciated WAF’s approach to the planned water disruption, saying, “The Water Authority of Fiji did really well in terms of giving us advance notice. I live in Carreras in Votualevu and we definitely would have been impacted by the water cuts. We personally at home don’t have a tank, but with the advance notice we were able to store enough water that took us through the weekend. We had a bit of water on Saturday morning (03/02), which was a surprise but then towards mid-morning it went completely off and on Sunday we didn’t have any water supply at all. But our stock of water, that was able to sustain us throughout the weekend. This morning preparing us for work, we were quite surprised to have a shower, because we were anticipating that there would be no water till today (06/02), so we were pleasantly surprised.”

“Fortunately in this situation, there was no need to call the Water Authority of Fiji to come and refill our tanks. However, we did see the water carting trucks around our area quite frequently. It was comforting to know that if we called, the trucks were on hand.”

“Thank you to the Water Authority of Fiji for being very proactive in their approach with this water cut. I know from a personal side, just talking to friends everyone really made the effort to ensure that their homes and families were well supplied with water.”

Wairebetia Resident, Arif Ali, said water supply normalised in his area 6am Monday morning (05/02).

“I am grateful that the water supply has been restored because water is the main thing in life. During the water shutdown I relied on our water tank. I did not face any problem because the water carting trucks were going around in my area until half past eleven. I heard about this water shutdown and I prepared myself for it by getting the drums filled and the rain water was also a source for us,” said Mr Ali.

Nasoso Resident, Elenoa Boseiwaqa was grateful that water supply normalised before the time given.

“Today (05/02) we are very happy that water supply is back to normal at home and that it came early. I am grateful that the Water Authority of Fiji was able to do the repairs on time because I have a little baby and we were wondering on how to cope with things. Once again, I would like to thank the Water Authority for doing their job well and that water came back on before the planned time, 5pm Tuesday (06/02).

Meanwhile, WAF’s Board Director said that WAF has capacity to undertake similar operations in the future and added that the relationship with customers “is the most important thing towards success.”

Finally, Mr Gounder on behalf of the Board thanked the management and the staff of the Authority for their hard work and commitment during to shutdown period. He added that with teamwork and proper planning anything is possible. He urged staff to continue to provide better and efficient service to the Fijian population.
